Hydraulic mining operations at the Gold Pan pit in 1903. Spectators are visible along the pit's edge. In the pit, a miner operates a high-pressure water nozzle, known as a giant, to direct a powerful water jet to wash rocks, dirt, gravel, and potential gold, into a bedrock sluice. A locomotive crane on temporary tracks assists with boulder removal. A group of people is gathered under the Evans hydraulic elevator within the pit. The Goldpan Shops are in view on higher ground to the northeast of the pit.

A locomotive crane descends on the tracks to the bottom of the Gold Pan pit. The Gold Pan Company began excavating in 1901 on seven miles of placer ground south of Breckenridge. The Evans hydraulic elevator system was employed to lift rocks, dirt, gravel, and potential gold from the pit. In July 1903, temporary tracks were laid and two locomotive cranes were used to assist in removing boulders and to crib up the pit walls. The pit took two years to build and operated from 1903 to 1905. In the background is Barney Ford Hill and The Goldpan Shops on South Ridge Street.
